Incumbent :

Main message to voters:

I am an honest, hard-working 37 year-old TD and am proud to have served this constituency and the people of Ireland to the very best of my ability. I’m delighted to have played my part in its recovery and ask the people of Carlow-Kilkenny to put their trust and faith in me for a second Dáil term.

Election history:

John Paul Phelan was elected to Kilkenny County Council on his first attempt in June 1999. He served two terms in the Seanad, polled exceptionally well in the European Elections in 2009 and topped the poll in the last general election. John Paul is a prominent member of the Banking Inquiry team.

Priorities:

  1. Deliver a Technological University of the South East – a key economic driver. Far too many bright young people leave this area and never return.
  2. Support and nurture small businesses and rural enterprises by creating a more equal tax environment for the self employed in SMEs, farming and food
  3. Restore confidence in the regional economy and entice emigrants home by continuing my work to attract more high quality, sustainable jobs here.
